“NanoTerasu” was selected as the nickname for the 3-GeV Next-Generation Synchrotron Radiation Facility.

National Institutes for Quantum Science and Technology and Photon Science Innovation Center have decided the nickname as “NanoTerasu” for the facility they are jointly developing on Aobayama New Campus of Tohoku University.
Nano means the “nano (one-billionth) world” of matter, and synchrotron radiation is a powerful light that illuminates and observes that nano world.
The nickname is a combination of two words, Nano and Terasu (literally means “illuminate” in Japanese), which describess the characteristics of the facility very well.
